Biography
Mickey Dollens
Mickey Dollens is an American politician, nonprofit executive director, author, and former educator born on August 22, 1987, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. A member of the Democratic Party, he has represented Oklahoma's 93rd House District since November 16, 2016. The district includes Oklahoma City.
Dollens has had a diverse and unconventional life journey. After losing his brother to mental illness, he pursued a career in professional sports, attempting to honor his brother's memory. He tried out for the NFL and, despite not making a professional team, was recruited to compete for Team USA as a bobsledder. His life also included work in the oil business before he became an educator.
In 2018, Dollens was among 208 Oklahoma City Public School teachers laid off due to budget cuts mandated by the Oklahoma legislature. Rather than seek employment elsewhere, he chose to focus his energy on winning an election and reforming the state legislature, vowing that no teacher or school should experience what he had endured.
Education
Dollens attended Southern Methodist University , where he studied English on a football scholarship. He graduated in 2011.
Political Experience
Dollens launched his campaign for the Oklahoma House in April 2016. During the summer of that year, he knocked on approximately 20,000 doors, winning the Democratic Primary with over 90% of the vote. On November 8, 2016, he flipped the seat with 59.84% of the general election vote, defeating Republican candidate Jay Means.
He was re-elected unopposed in 2022 and currently serves as House Minority Whip. Dollens serves on multiple committees including A&B Public Safety, Alcohol Tobacco and Controlled Substances, Elections and Ethics, and Utilities. His legislative focus centers on education, workforce development, agriculture, mental health, and equality for all Oklahomans. In 2019, he received the prestigious Legislator of the Year Award from the Oklahoma Democratic Veterans.
