Biography
Michelle Lujan Grisham is a Democratic politician serving as the 32nd Governor of New Mexico since 2019, representing the entire state rather than a specific district. Born on October 24, 1959, in Los Alamos, New Mexico, she is a 12th-generation New Mexican and the first Democratic Latina elected governor in U.S. history. She was reelected for a second term in 2022, beginning in 2023. Notable achievements include overseeing historic job growth with over 134,000 jobs added, achieving the state's lowest unemployment rate in nearly 20 years, major investments in public education, the Energy Transition Act for clean energy goals, creation of the Early Childhood Trust Fund, and initiatives like Care Corps for seniors and people with disabilities.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a Bachelor of University Studies from the University of New Mexico in 1981 and a law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law.
- Early Career: Worked for the state bar’s lawyer referral program for the elderly, served 14 years as director of the state agency on aging , co-founded a small business providing health insurance access, and led the state health insurance pool.

- New Mexico Secretary of Health , expanding school-based health centers and teen pregnancy prevention.
