Biography

Senator Michael Padilla

Michael Padilla is a Democratic State Senator representing District 14 in the New Mexico State Senate, serving since 2013. Born June 13, 1972, in Albuquerque, Padilla is a native of Los Padillas, a rural farming community his family settled more than 160 years ago. He is known for his high-energy, solutions-driven approach to legislation and became the first senator to pass a bill in each of his first, second, and fifth years in office.

Education

Padilla attended the University of New Mexico, where he studied Public Administration from 1990 to 1994. He also attended the University of Phoenix, pursuing Business Administration from 1993 to 1994.

Political Experience

Legislative Leadership:
Padilla serves as Majority Whip of the New Mexico State Senate, a leadership position he has been elected to four times since 2015. He serves on ten legislative committees, including the Senate Finance Committee , and chairs the Science, Technology & Telecommunications Committee, a role he held for approximately a decade.

Notable Achievements:
A central focus of Padilla's legislative work is eliminating widespread poverty across New Mexico. His accomplishments include:

  • Sponsoring the nation's first Hunger Free Students' Bill of Rights in 2017, which increased meal funding by 30% and strengthened partnerships with New Mexico farmers and ranchers
  • Successfully creating the New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department in 2019, a cabinet-level agency overseeing all birth-to-five services
  • Advancing legislation in job creation and economic development, broadband expansion, child protective services, and education reform

Community Involvement:
Padilla has served on numerous boards, including Youth Development Incorporated , Special Olympics New Mexico, Junior Achievement of New Mexico, the Association of Commerce and Industry, and the State Workforce Development Board. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Popejoy Hall and has held positions within the Democratic Party of New Mexico, including Ward Vice-Chair.
