Biography
Senator Michael McLendon is a Republican representing District 1 in the Mississippi State Senate, which covers part of DeSoto County. Born on November 14, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, he is an insurance producer, devoted Christian, husband to Vickey , and father. A longtime resident of DeSoto County, he is known for conservative values, community service, and opposition to tax increases and unplanned development. Notable achievements include authoring and passing Senate Bill 2113 to ban the teaching of critical race theory in classrooms, as well as chairing the State Library Committee and serving on committees like Insurance, Appropriations, Education, and others.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended Oakhaven Baptist Academy in Memphis, Tennessee; graduated from Northwest Mississippi Community College and Memphis State University. He was a Class A PGA member, working at golf courses including Wedgewood, KoOlina, and Southwind.
- Early Career: Worked 19 years as an insurance agent for Farm Bureau Insurance of Tennessee, then joined Lipscomb & Pitts Insurance in 2013.
- Political Experience: Elected to Hernando City Council in 2013, serving as alderman until 2019, where he fought reckless development and higher taxes. Elected to Mississippi State Senate District 1 in 2019 after winning the Republican primary runoff and uncontested general election; reelected uncontested in 2023 and won a competitive 2025 primary by wide margins. Active in community roles including founding member of Hernando Youth Football Association, youth sports coach, and NRA/Ducks Unlimited member.
