Representative Michael McCaul
Biography
Michael Thomas McCaul Sr. was born on January 14, 1962, in Dallas, Texas. A fourth-generation Texan, he is an American politician and attorney currently serving as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. McCaul represents Texas's 10th congressional district, which stretches from Lake Travis to the Brazos Valley and includes Austin, Bastrop, Brazos, Burleson, Colorado, Fayette, Grimes, Lee, Madison, Travis, Washington, Waller, and Williamson counties. He is a member of the Republican Party and has been elected to multiple consecutive terms since 2005.
Education
McCaul earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business and History from Trinity University and holds a Juris Doctor from St. Mary's University School of Law. He is also a graduate of the Senior Executive Fellows Program at Harvard University's School of Government. In 2009, he received St. Mary's Distinguished Graduate Award.
Political Experience
Prior to his election to Congress, McCaul served in several significant legal and law enforcement roles. He worked as Chief of Counter Terrorism and National Security in the U.S. Attorney's office for the Western District of Texas and led the Joint Terrorism Task Force focused on detecting, deterring, and preventing terrorist activity. He also served as a federal prosecutor in the Department of Justice's Public Integrity Section in Washington, D.C., and held the position of Texas Deputy Attorney General under current U.S. Senator John Cornyn.
In Congress, McCaul has held notable leadership positions. He chaired the House Committee on Homeland Security during the 113th, 114th, and 115th Congresses. During the 118th Congress, he served as the first Texan to chair the Foreign Affairs Committee, which oversees legislation impacting the diplomatic community. He is currently serving his eleventh term in the House of Representatives.
