Biography
Senator Michael Garrett
Michael Kennedy Garrett is a Democratic member of the North Carolina State Senate, representing the 27th district, which covers Guilford County. Born in 1984 or 1985 in Robeson County, North Carolina, he was first elected to the Senate in 2018, defeating Republican incumbent Trudy Wade. As of 2026, he is serving his fourth term in the Senate.
Garrett is a small business owner and the managing partner of a family-owned marketing firm. He resides in Greensboro with his wife, Allison, and their two children, Jack and Charlotte.
Education
Garrett earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a focus on Marketing and Economics from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, graduating in 2007. He is a product of Guilford County Schools and remains a passionate advocate for substantial investments in the public education system.
Political Experience
Garrett has been an active member of multiple legislative committees in the North Carolina General Assembly, including the Agriculture, Energy, and Environment Committee; Appropriations Committee on Department of Transportation; Commerce and Insurance Committee; Education and Higher Education Committee; and Transportation Committee. He also serves on several joint legislative commissions and oversight committees, including the Joint Legislative Elections Oversight Committee and the Redistricting and Elections Committee.
Beyond his legislative work, Garrett has demonstrated commitment to civic engagement. He previously served as Chair of the UNCG Board of Alumni and as a member of the United Way of Greater Greensboro's Education Impact Council. He also serves as a member of the North Carolina State Health Coordinating Council.
