Biography

Micah Lasher

Micah C. Lasher was born on December 18, 1981, and is a Democratic member of the New York State Assembly representing District 69. He has spent his career in public service, primarily focused on issues affecting the West Side of Manhattan.

Political Experience

Lasher has served at all three levels of government prior to his election to the State Assembly in 2024:

  • Aide to Congressman Jerry Nadler
  • Director of State Legislative Affairs for New York City under Mayor Michael Bloomberg
  • Chief of Staff to the New York State Attorney General
  • Director of Policy for the State of New York under Governor Kathy Hochul
  • Head of Policy and Communications at Sidewalk Labs

Notable Achievements

During his tenure as Director of Policy for Governor Hochul, Lasher played a leading role in several major legislative initiatives:

  • Gun safety legislation following the mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde
  • Abortion protections for providers and patients after the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision
  • Minimum wage indexing to inflation, making New York one of the first states to do so
  • All-electric building requirements for new statewide construction
  • Mental health investment, serving as one of the architects of a $1 billion plan to reverse decades of disinvestment
  • Housing reform, helping craft a comprehensive zoning and housing plan that The New York Times described as the "first serious attempt by a New York governor since the 1960s" to tackle exclusionary zoning

Additional Leadership

Lasher has chaired the Riverside Park Conservancy since 2024, where he oversaw the tripling of the organization's capacity for park improvements and helped secure over $400 million in city support for infrastructure projects. He has also served on the boards of Everytown for Gun Safety and the Community Service Society, ultimately serving as Vice Chair of the latter organization for fifteen years.

In the 2024 State Assembly election, Lasher won the Democratic primary in District 69 with 52.82 percent of the vote in a five-candidate race and ran unopposed in the general election.
