Biography
Micah Aiu
Micah Po'okela Kim Aiu is an American Democratic politician born on May 24, 1989, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is the son of Donna Mercado Kim, a state senator who has served as a public official in Hawaii since the 1980s. Growing up, Aiu frequently campaigned alongside his mother, which shaped his interest in public service.
Education
Aiu earned his undergraduate degree from Lasell University and obtained his law degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii Manoa. He has been a practicing attorney since 2016, specializing in construction and commercial law matters.
Political Experience
Aiu served in the Hawaii House of Representatives for the 32nd district from November 2022 to November 2024. His district encompassed Fort Shafter, Moanalua, Āliamanu, Foster Village, and portions of ʻAiea and Hālawa.
He was initially elected in 2022, defeating Republican opponent Garner Shimizu. During his tenure, he held several committee positions, including vice chair of the Housing Committee, and served as a member of the Finance Committee and the Transportation Committee. In the Finance Committee, he worked on income tax reduction initiatives.
Notably, his election in 2022 created the first-ever mother-son duo to serve together in the state legislature. Aiu lost his reelection bid in 2024 to Shimizu, concluding his service in the House.
