Biography
Mia Bonta is a Democrat representing California's 18th Assembly District in the East Bay, including parts of Oakland, Alameda, and Emeryville. Elected in a special election on August 31, 2021, she has served since then, winning re-election in 2024 with 80.3% of the vote. A proud Black Latina born to Puerto Rican parents in the Bronx on January 26, 1972, she is married to California Attorney General Rob Bonta, whom she met at Yale; they have three children and reside in Alameda. Her priorities include affordable housing, homelessness, criminal justice reform, climate action, education, healthcare access, and equity for working families.
Notable achievements include securing $35 million for universal preschool expansion, $10 million for domestic violence survivors, and passing laws against prescription drug price gouging, protecting minors from deportation, and regulating AI in healthcare . She chairs the Assembly Health Committee and serves in the California Legislative Black Caucus.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: B.A. in Psychology from Yale University; Ed.M. from Harvard Graduate School of Education; J.D. from Yale Law School.
- Political Experience: Elected to Alameda Unified School District Board in 2018, serving as President until 2021. Appointed delegate to the California Democratic Party for AD-18 and advised on women, education, and early childhood committees. Previously CEO of Oakland Promise, leading cradle-to-college initiatives for Oakland public schools. Led nonprofits improving outcomes for low-income students and served on boards like Community Change Action and Alameda Free Library Foundation.
