Biography
Melanie Scheible is a Democratic member of the Nevada Senate representing District 9, which covers southwestern suburbs of Las Vegas in Clark County, including most of Enterprise and parts of Summerlin South and Spring Valley. Born on May 27, 1989, in Sacramento, California, she serves as an attorney and politician, currently acting as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and Chief Majority Whip. Notable achievements include reforming the Nevada Department of Corrections to improve justice for incarcerated individuals and their families, as well as advocacy as a champion for the LGBTQ+ community, of which she is an active member.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a BA from Stanford University and a JD from Columbia University.
- Political Experience: Elected to the Nevada Senate in 2018, succeeding Becky Harris; remains a deputy district attorney in Clark County outside of legislative sessions. Started her legal career as a Deputy District Attorney handling thousands of criminal cases, and now practices criminal defense, including misdemeanors, felonies, appeals, and jury trials. Sponsors key legislation such as SB425 establishing the Commission on Innovation and Excellence in Education and SB428 proposing a sales tax exemption on diapers.
