Biography
Meghan Lukens is a Democratic member of the Colorado House of Representatives, representing House District 26 in northwest Colorado, which includes Eagle, Routt, Moffat, and Rio Blanco counties. A native of Steamboat Springs, she was elected in 2022 at age 29 after campaigning on issues like affordable housing, education funding, and rural needs. Notable achievements include sponsoring SB23-001 for workforce housing on public land, HB23-1064 for interstate teacher mobility, and behavioral health bills earning her Mental Health Legislator of the Year from Mental Health Colorado. She currently serves as Chair of the House Education Committee and a member of the Agriculture, Water & Natural Resources Committee.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and Secondary Social Studies Education from the University of Colorado Boulder; completed a Master’s in Leadership in Educational Organizations with Principal’s Licensure from the University of Colorado Denver in 2020.
- Professional Experience: Began teaching high school social studies in Pristina, Kosovo; taught at Peak to Peak Charter School in Lafayette and then at Steamboat Springs High School , covering subjects like AP U.S. Government, Politics, Economics, civics, world history, and geography. After election, became a part-time civics teacher at Steamboat Mountain School.
- Political Experience: Elected to Colorado House District 26 in 2022; focuses legislation on rural education, teacher shortages, mental health access, affordable housing, and preserving wildlife and natural resources. Serves on the Legislative Council.
