Biography
Megan Lakshmi Srinivas is a Democratic member of the Iowa House of Representatives, representing District 30. An Iowa native and infectious disease physician based in Des Moines, she was elected in November 2022 as the youngest woman of color in Iowa legislative history and was reelected for a second term in November 2024. Notable achievements include her appointment by Governor Tom Vilsack as the first student representative on the Iowa State Board of Education , chairing Iowa’s Biden-Harris COVID Response Council in 2020, and founding Presents of Hope, a 10-year initiative providing essentials and holiday gifts to residents of homeless and domestic abuse shelters. She serves on key committees including Administration and Regulation Budget , Agriculture, Commerce, Judiciary, and State Government, and holds positions on the Iowa Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission and NAMI Iowa board.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School; completed internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and infectious disease fellowship at UNC School of Medicine; holds an MD, MPH, and certificate in health policy.
- Professional Experience: Infectious disease physician and public health researcher at a rural federally-qualified health center in Fort Dodge; ID expert for Iowa Primary Care Association; hosts CDC/AMA podcast "Stories of Care" on infection prevention and health equity; runs a public health consulting business.
- Political Experience: Unsuccessful 2018 run for Iowa's 9th Senate District; elected to House District 30 in 2022 ; Future Caucus Innovation Fellow for healthcare and prenatal-to-three policy cohorts .
