Mazie K. Hirono was born on November 3, 1947 in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. She immigrated to Hawaii with her mother and brother when she was very young to escape an abusive father. Hirono became a naturalized American citizen in 1959. She earned a degree in psychology from the University of Hawaii-Manoa and a juris doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center.read less
