Biography

Maura Hirschauer is a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives representing the 49th District, which includes parts of Batavia, West Chicago, South Elgin, Wayne, Bartlett, and small portions of Aurora and Geneva. Elected in 2020 and sworn in on January 13, 2021, she serves as a full-time legislator with notable achievements in gun safety advocacy, criminal justice reform, and environmental policy.

Maura Hirschauer is a mother of three, former elementary school teacher, community activist, and resident of Batavia, Illinois, with her husband Jim, a physicist at Fermilab. A founding member and legislative lead of the Kane and Kendall County chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, she has advocated for universal background checks, closing FOID loopholes, and keeping guns out of schools. She previously served as president and executive board member of the Batavia Mothers’ Club Foundation, supporting charitable efforts for women, children, and families in the Fox Valley. Hirschauer has sponsored key legislation, including HB1739 and HB1742 . She supports environmental justice, voting for Illinois’ Climate & Equitable Jobs Act to advance carbon-free energy.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: B.A. in English from Colby College in Waterville, Maine; pursued graduate studies in Elementary Education at the University of Colorado at Denver.
