Biography

Maura Healey is the Democratic Governor of Massachusetts, serving statewide since January 5, 2023. She is the first woman and first openly lesbian person elected to the position, making history as one of the first two openly lesbian governors in the United States.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: B.A. from Harvard College; J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law.
  • Early Career: Worked as a prosecutor in the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and as a litigation partner handling commercial and securities cases at Hale and Dorr .
  • Attorney General's Office: Served as Chief of the Civil Rights Division, leading the first state challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act; oversaw Public Protection & Advocacy and Business & Labor Bureaus, holding banks accountable post-2008 financial crisis. Elected Massachusetts Attorney General in 2014 and reelected in 2018; advocated for consumers, civil rights, opioid crisis accountability , climate action , and protections against predatory lending.

Notable Achievements

As Governor, Healey has prioritized affordability, climate innovation, education, and housing: appointed the nation's first cabinet-level Climate Chief; enacted tax cuts including the most generous Child and Family Tax Credit; signed the $5 billion Affordable Homes Act and $4 billion Mass Leads Act; expanded free K-12 school meals, community college, and apprenticeships; capped health care costs; invested in schools and MBTA improvements.
