Biography
Matt Ritter is a Democratic State Representative serving Connecticut's 1st Assembly District in Hartford. A lifelong Hartford resident born on May 12, 1983, he is the current Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives , elected unanimously by House Democrats in 2020 and serving since the 2021 session. He first won election in 2010, defeating incumbent Kenneth P. Green in the primary by two votes and securing 91% in the general; he has won re-election with an average 92% margin since 2012, facing no Republican opposition from 2018-2022. His term ends in 2027.
Notable achievements include leading passage of a law eliminating the "poverty tax" and championing historic investments in children's mental health. As former House Majority Leader and Co-Chair of the Public Health Committee , he addressed the opioid crisis, increased hospital fee transparency, and expanded private insurance coverage for mental health services. He aided the hospitality industry during the pandemic and serves on the Legislative Management Committee as Co-Chair.
Awards include Hartford Business Journal's "Power 50," "Legislator of the Year" by the CT Chapter of the American College of Physicians, honors from the Connecticut State Medical Society, Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, Connecticut Restaurant Association, and others for mental health and community leadership. Prior to the House, he served three years on the Hartford City Council, chairing Planning & Economic Development and Legislative Affairs committees. He is a partner at the Hartford law firm Shipman and Goodwin, son of former Speaker Tom Ritter and Connecticut Supreme Court Justice Christine E. Keller, husband to physician Marilyn Katz, and father of two.
