Biography
Matt Moonen is a Democratic representative for Maine House District 117, which covers part of Portland in Cumberland County. He currently serves as House Majority Leader and is openly gay, married to Jeremy Kennedy, who is Chief of Staff to Governor Janet Mills. A longtime progressive leader, Moonen previously served seven years as Executive Director of EqualityMaine, a statewide LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, and as Deputy Campaign Manager to Governor Janet Mills. Notable achievements include leading efforts to defeat a bill that would have banned Maine from cooperating with law enforcement from states investigating gender-affirming care accessed in Maine.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Bachelor's degree from Northwestern University .
- Political Experience: First elected to the Maine House in 2012, serving through 2020 ; term-limited in 2020, ran unsuccessfully for Maine Secretary of State. Returned in 2022 for District 117, re-elected unopposed in 2024; now in his sixth term across 129th, 131st, and 132nd Legislatures. Serves on the Rules and Business of the House Committee, chairs the Joint Select Committee on Joint Rules, and is a member of the Legislative Council. Previously Democratic Leader .
