Biography

Matthew Martinez is a Democrat representing Colorado House District 62, which covers portions of Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Huerfano, Mineral, Pueblo, Rio Grande, and Saguache counties. A seventh-generation Colorado native born and raised in Monte Vista, he is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2009. Elected in 2022 after an unsuccessful 2020 primary bid, he assumed office in January 2023 and currently serves as Majority Co-Whip. His legislative priorities focus on rural issues like healthcare access, education, economic development, and natural resource protection. Notable committee roles include vice-chair of the Education Committee, and membership on Agriculture, Water and Natural Resources, and the Joint Select Committee on Rising Utility Rates.
