Biography
Matt Longjohn is a Democratic state representative serving Michigan's 40th House District, which includes Portage, Oshtemo Township, Texas Township, and southwest Kalamazoo, representing 90,211 constituents. Born June 8, 1971, in Kalamazoo, he is married to Valerie and has two children. A physician and public health leader, Longjohn was elected in 2024 and took office in January 2025, making him the only physician in the state Legislature. He previously ran as the Democratic nominee for Michigan's 6th congressional district in 2018, losing to incumbent Fred Upton. Notable achievements include leading national initiatives on chronic disease prevention, health equity, and environmental protections; being named one of the top 100 health innovators by the Obama Administration; and over 25 years developing community health coalitions. He serves on key committees including Appropriations and the Select Committee on Protecting Michigan Employees and Small Businesses.
