Biography
Matt Koleszar is a Democratic State Representative serving Michigan's 22nd House District, which includes the cities of Northville, Plymouth, and portions of Livonia, as well as parts of Northville and Plymouth Townships in Wayne County. Born on September 21, 1981, in Royal Oak, he resides in Plymouth Township with his wife, Kimberly Bush-Koleszar, and their rescue pets. A lifelong Michigander raised in Walled Lake by his single mother, an operating room nurse, Koleszar is committed to issues like school funding, road repairs, clean water, and healthcare access. Notable achievements include sponsoring HB 4247 , providing tuition-free public university access for children of fallen police and firefighters, and HB 4369 to create a paraprofessional-to-teacher pathway addressing teacher shortages. He currently serves his fourth term, elected most recently on November 5, 2024, and sworn in on January 2, 2025.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a BA in Secondary Education from Saginaw Valley State University ; MA in English Studies for Teachers from Eastern Michigan University.
- Pre-Political Career: Public school teacher and coach at Airport Community School District ; president of the Airport Education Association in Carleton, teaching civics and AP government.
- Political Experience: Elected to the Michigan House in 2018; serving fourth term as of 2025. Committee roles include Chair of Education, and service on Elections, Higher Education, Labor, Appropriations Subcommittee on School Aid & Education, Transportation and Infrastructure, Education and Workforce, and Election Integrity. Democratic Vice-chair of Elections and Ethics. Active in Plymouth, Northville, and Canton Democratic Clubs.
