Biography

Senator Matt D. Klein is a Democratic-Farmer-Labor member of the Minnesota Senate representing District 53, which includes communities such as Inver Grove Heights, South Saint Paul, West Saint Paul, Saint Paul Park, Cottage Grove, Newport, Mendota Heights, Lilydale, Sunfish Lake, and Grey Cloud Island Township in Dakota and Washington Counties. Elected in 2016, re-elected in 2020 and 2022, he is currently in his third term and serves as Chair of the Commerce and Consumer Protection Committee, Vice Chair of the Taxes Committee, and a member of the Energy, Utilities, Environment, and Climate Committee. Notable achievements include leading consumer protection legislation such as ticket transparency, junk fee bans, data privacy enhancements, student loan borrower protections, and curbing copper wire theft; establishing the Prescription Drug Affordability Board to limit high-cost drug prices; and contributing to the largest income tax cut in state history, including a child tax credit. A physician practicing internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Klein has advocated for health care access, reproductive rights, and anti-fraud measures. Born September 29, 1967, he resides in Mendota Heights with his wife Kristine and their five adult children. He has announced his candidacy for Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District in the 2026 election.
