Biography

Senator Matt Harrington

Matt Harrington is a Republican state senator representing Senate District 33 in Maine, which encompasses the York County municipalities of Alfred, Lebanon, Sanford, and Waterboro. He is currently serving his second term in the Maine State Senate, having been reelected in November 2024.

Harrington was born and raised in Maine and currently resides in Sanford with his wife Lauren and their two dogs. He is deeply involved in his local community, serving as a board member for the Sanford Mainers, a New England Collegiate Baseball League team. He is also an active member of the Sanford Elks Club, a Freemason, and a Shriner with Kora Temple. He previously served on his church's board of trustees, eventually becoming chairman.

Education

Harrington earned an Associate's degree in Fire Science from Southern Maine Community College and a Bachelor's degree in Criminology from the University of Southern Maine.

Political Experience

Before his Senate service, Harrington represented District 19 in the Maine House of Representatives for four consecutive terms from 2015 to 2022. In the House, he served on the State and Local Government Committee, the Innovation, Development, Economic Advancement and Business Committee, the Government Oversight Committee, and the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee.

Since joining the Senate in 2022, Harrington has been appointed Assistant Senate Republican Leader for the 132nd Legislature following his November 2024 reelection. This role made him a member of the Legislative Council, the governing body of the Maine Legislature. He currently serves on the Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee and previously served as the Senate Republican Lead on the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee.

Professional Background

Beyond his legislative work, Harrington has extensive experience in public safety and real estate. He is a 17-year veteran of law enforcement and currently serves as a reserve police officer for the Kennebunk Police Department. He previously worked eight years in the fire service in Maine as a firefighter and advanced emergency medical technician. He is also a licensed real estate agent, primarily serving York County.
