Biography
Matt Claman is a Democratic state senator representing Senate District H in West Anchorage, Alaska. Born in 1959 in Massachusetts, he is 65 years old , married to Lisa Rieger, with two children: Maia and Benjamin. He has resided in Alaska for 36 years, primarily in Anchorage since 1990. Claman is an attorney, legislator, wilderness guide, and emergency medical technician. Notable achievements include serving as Acting Mayor of Anchorage in 2009, Chair of the Anchorage Assembly in 2008, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and leading a 2024 crime bill allowing drug dealers to face second-degree murder charges and easing grand jury testimony for sexual assault survivors. He entered the 2026 Alaska governor's race as a Democrat and is part of the bipartisan Senate majority caucus.
