Biography
Senator Matt Brass
Matthew Freeman Brass was born on January 19, 1978, and is a Republican representing Georgia's 6th Senate District. He was first elected to the Georgia State Senate in November 2016 and was sworn in on January 9, 2017. The 6th District includes Coweta and Heard counties, as well as portions of Carroll County.
Brass was raised in Newnan, Georgia, where he attended Newnan High School. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy before pursuing higher education.
Education
Brass graduated from the University of Georgia following his naval service.
Political Experience
After college, Brass worked in the private sector for seven years as a golf club professional. He then transitioned to politics, serving as a field representative and Chief of Staff to U.S. Representative Lynn Westmoreland before his election to the state senate.
In the Georgia State Senate, Brass has held several notable positions:
- Majority Caucus Vice Chair
- Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee
- Secretary of the Senate Committee on Children and Families
- Member of the Senate Committees on Administrative Affairs, Health and Human Services, and Regulated Industries and Utilities
- Ex-Officio of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and the Environment
Professionally, Brass is a partner at Lott Metal & Commercial Roofing.
Brass is active in his community, serving on boards including Communities in Schools-Coweta, Leadership Coweta, and the Newnan-Coweta Habitat for Humanity. He is a Deacon at Newnan Presbyterian Church and a member of the Newnan Rotary Club. He is married to Maegan and has three children: Freeman, Archie, and Rinny.
