Biography
Senator Matt Blake is a Democrat representing Iowa Senate District 22, which includes portions of Johnston, Urbandale, Saylor Township, Crocker Township, and Des Moines. A South Dakota native, he is an attorney, Iowa Army National Guard Major serving as Judge Advocate for the 67th Troop Command, and community leader in Urbandale, where he lives with his wife Alaina, a Waukee-based optometrist, and their two children. He was elected to his first term in the Iowa Senate in 2024, serving from January 13, 2025, to January 10, 2027. Notable achievements include his 2021 deployment to Kuwait and Iraq with Operation Inherent Resolve, election to the Urbandale City Council in 2019 , and community involvement such as organizing the Urbandale Fourth of July Celebration and serving on the Urbandale Civil Rights Commission. On the City Council, he championed economic development, support for small businesses, paid family leave for city staff, renewable energy and solar initiatives, expansion of fire and police departments, establishment of a human services budget, and development of a Crisis Intervention Team for mental health and substance abuse crises—all without raising the property tax levy.
