Biography
Representative Mary Madison
Mary Lee Madison was born in 1950 and is an American politician, minister, and educator. She has represented Iowa House District 31 since January 2023, serving parts of southwest Polk County and a small portion of southeast Dallas County, including most of West Des Moines. Madison is a member of the Democratic Party.
She and her husband, Dr. L. Keith Madison, have lived in West Des Moines for over twenty years. They are parents to three adult children and grandparents to one granddaughter.
Education and Professional Background
Madison holds multiple professional credentials and roles. She is an ordained minister, a school counselor, and a licensed professional counselor specializing in social services and pastoral care. Her career has combined religious leadership with education and community service as a volunteer and educator.
Political Experience
Madison ran for the Iowa House District 31 seat following redistricting in 2021. In the 2022 Democratic primary on June 7, she defeated Michael Andreski with over 62 percent of the vote. She then won the general election on November 8, 2022, against Republican Justin Pearson with over 56 percent of the vote, securing her first term in the Iowa House.
Madison serves on several legislative committees, including Economic Growth and Technology, Education, Environmental Protection , Transportation, Justice System Appropriations Subcommittee, and International Relations.
Her legislative priorities include public education, mental health, and reproductive rights. She is pro-choice and advocates for stricter gun control. Madison is also committed to fundamental rights, including voting rights, and regularly engages in community listening sessions to understand constituent concerns.
