Biography
Mary E. González is a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives, serving District 75 in eastern El Paso County, including areas like San Elizario, Clint, Socorro, and parts of El Paso. First elected in 2012, she is currently in her seventh term and made history as the first openly pansexual elected official in U.S. government and the first woman to represent HD-75.
Born October 30, 1983, in Clint, Texas, where she was raised and graduated from Clint High School, González has focused her legislative work on improving public schools, economic development, agriculture, women's rights, maternal healthcare, and LGBTQ+ representation. She serves as Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Committee and House Natural Resources Committee, Treasurer of the Information Technology Caucus, Vice-Chair of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus *, and *Chair of the Board of Latino Legislative Leaders. Notable achievements include authoring bills for education and agriculture, launching the Positivity in Politics initiative, and receiving awards such as “Champion of Equality” and “Advocate of the Year” from Equality Texas, youngest inductee into the El Paso Women’s Hall of Fame , Progressive Movement Leadership Award , and recognition by Latino Leaders Magazine and Latina Magazine.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: B.A. in History and Mexican American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin; M.A. in Social Justice from St. Edward’s University; Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction - Cultural Studies in Education from UT-Austin.
- Professional Experience: Worked at the National Hispanic Institute, University of Texas at Austin, and as Assistant Dean for Student Multicultural Affairs at Southwestern University; currently Executive Director for MASBA: School Board Members for Latino Equity, independent consultant, and adjunct professor at St. Edward’s University.
- Political Experience: Began career working for former Texas House Dean Paul Moreno and State Representative Richard Raymond; served as Latino Outreach Coordinator for the Texas Democratic Party; elected to Texas House District 75 in 2012 and re-elected multiple times, including in 2018 and for the 2025-2027 term.
