Biography
Mary Fortier is a Democratic member of the Connecticut House of Representatives, representing District 79 . She assumed office on January 4, 2023, and won re-election on November 5, 2024. A lifelong Bristol resident born in the city, she previously served eight years as a Bristol City Councilwoman, including on committees for Salary, Public Works, Water, Economic and Community Development, and the Disability Commission. She currently holds leadership roles as Assistant Majority Leader, House Vice Chair of the Aging Committee, and serves on the Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee and Human Services Committee. Notable achievements include securing state grant funding for local projects, strengthening mental health parity protections, supporting open space preservation, reducing energy costs, and expanding student scholarship opportunities. Fortier is married to David Fortier, with six children and three grandchildren; she enjoys sewing, gardening, and yard work.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a BA in History and Secondary Education from Boston College ; JD from Western New England College School of Law .
- Professional Experience: Worked as an attorney and clerk in the State of Connecticut Judicial Branch; active in Judicial Professional Employees AFT-CT union and Greater Bristol Labor Federation. Currently President of the Human Resources Agency Board of Directors, succeeding her role on the Bristol Community Organization board. Began political involvement campaigning for Democrats as a teenager.
