Biography
Mary Ann Shallcross Smith is a Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, representing District 46 . An educator and child care consultant, she previously served in the same district from 2009 to 2011, lost reelection in 2010, and returned in 2021 after winning in November 2020. She is proprietor of Dr. Day Care Learning Centers, which she founded and grew to nine locations, and established the Business Owners of Child Care Association of Rhode Island in 2011. Notable achievements include chairing the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce in 2016 and receiving the Angel in Adoption Federal Award in 2011 for advocacy on birth certificate access. In recent sessions, she championed medical debt reforms , laws for in-home hair care for those with special needs, speech-language pathologist assistant licensing updates, and funding for psychiatric resources for children and new parents.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended Saint Patrick's School for elementary education, then Lincoln Public Schools, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1970.
- Political Experience: Elected to Lincoln School Committee in 1988. Served Rhode Island House District 46 , committees on Constituent Services, Finance, Labor, and Small Business. Returned 2021-present as chair of House Small Business Committee, second vice chair of House Veterans' Affairs Committee, and member of House Education Committee and House Oversight Committee.
