Biography
Martin Bradshaw "Marty" Flynn Jr., born September 18, 1975, is a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania State Senate representing the 22nd District, which includes parts of Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Monroe Counties. A Scranton native, Flynn previously served over eight years in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 113th District after winning election in 2012. He won a special election on May 18, 2021, with 51.2% of the vote to succeed Senator John Blake, and was sworn in on June 9, 2021.
Notable achievements include leading efforts to hold the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission accountable for over $150 million in uncollected tolls, filing legislation in January 2022 to reform toll collection methods, and introducing a bill in February 2022 allowing judges to compel child support payments from DUI offenders whose actions killed a parent. Flynn serves as Democratic Chair of the Transportation Committee and is a member of the Consumer Protection & Professional Licensure, Labor & Industry, Law & Justice, Finance, Appropriations, and Community, Economic & Recreational Development Committees. His priorities include local economic development, labor union rights, and housing initiatives.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Scranton Preparatory School , excelling in baseball, football, and wrestling; earned a bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies from Marywood University.
- Early Career: Professional boxer and mixed martial arts fighter for a decade; later worked as Inmate Education and Program Coordinator and Chairman of the Prison Misconduct Board at Lackawanna County Prison.
- Political Experience:
- Elected to Pennsylvania House in 2012; served from January 2013 to 2021.
- Elected to Pennsylvania Senate in special election May 2021; serving since June 2021.
