Biography
Martin J. Sweeney is a Democratic politician from Cleveland, Ohio, currently serving as Council Member for Cuyahoga County District 3 since January 2021. A native of Cleveland's West Side, he is widowed with four children and previously represented Cleveland City Council Ward 20 , where he served as President from 2005 to 2013 and Majority Leader. He represented Ohio House of Representatives District 23 from 2014 to 2018, resigning in October 2018 after an unsuccessful Senate bid. Notable achievements include his role in downtown Cleveland redevelopment projects like the Medical Mart, Convention Center, urban casino, and Cleveland State University expansions; recipient of Cleveland State University's 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award for Community Service; and former player on the CSU basketball team.
