Biography

Martin Heinrich, born on October 17, 1971, in Fallon, Nevada, is a Democratic U.S. Senator representing New Mexico. Raised in Cole Camp, Missouri, he was the first in his family to attend college, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1995. Heinrich's early career included work as a contractor at Phillips Laboratories at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He also served in AmeriCorps for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and was the Executive Director of the Cottonwood Gulch Foundation. His public service began with his election to the Albuquerque City Council in 2003, where he served as president from 2005 to 2006. Heinrich was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008, serving two terms before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012. He was re-elected in 2018 and 2024.
