His grandparents were among the first Japanese Americans from Riverside County to be sent to internment camps during World War II. Takano attended Harvard University, where he graduated with a B.A. in government in 1983. After college, Takano became a public high school teacher in Rialto, California where he taught British literature for over 20 years. He was elected to Congress in 2012, becoming one of the first openly gay people of color ever elected to Congress.
