Biography
Mark C. Montigny is a Democratic state senator representing the Second Bristol and Plymouth district in Massachusetts, which includes New Bedford , Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, and Acushnet. Born on June 20, 1961, he has served since 1993, making him the longest-serving member of the Massachusetts Senate with over 33 years in office as of recent records. As Dean of the Senate, he holds key leadership roles, including Chairman of the Senate Committee on Post Audit and Oversight and Chairman of the Joint Committee on Healthcare. Notable achievements include spearheading the 2011 anti-human trafficking law, which established protections for survivors and a support trust fund; securing significant budget earmarks and policy wins for his district, such as funding for arts and culture contributing to New Bedford's downtown renaissance; and advancing animal welfare legislation like bans on cat declawing and safer dog kennel standards.
