Biography
Mark Johnson is a Republican Arkansas State Senator representing District 17, which includes Conway and parts of surrounding counties. A fifth-generation Arkansan from rural Faulkner County, he was elected in 2018 and sworn in January 2019. He serves as Co-Chair of the Joint Energy Committee and has held roles on committees like Revenue and Taxation, City, County and Local Affairs, Joint Budget, and Joint Auditing. Notable achievements include sponsoring the Arkansas State Capitol and Historical Monument Protection Act, legislation for electric vehicle infrastructure, expansion of charter schools and school choice, protections for college student expression, and reforms to election and campaign finance laws. He has mentored at Boys State and is active in the Little Rock Rotary Club, having chaired the Pulaski County Republican Committee and served as President of the Arkansas Republican County Chairmen’s Association. Married to Catherine for over 45 years, they have two grown daughters, Allison and Andrea, and reside in the Ferndale community of west Pulaski County.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Conway High School and attended Hendrix College.
- Early Career: Worked for Congressman Wilbur Mills in Washington, D.C.; served with the Small Business Administration; Director of Community Development for North Little Rock; Director of the Department of Local Services in Governor Frank White's cabinet.
- Political Experience: Business consultant with Mark D. Johnson & Associates, advising on economic development, fundraising, and government relations; legislative service since 2019 .
