Biography
Mark E. Huizenga is a Republican state senator representing Michigan's 30th Senate District, which includes portions of Kent and Ottawa counties. He resides in Walker, Michigan, is married to Kristine, and has three children: Elaina, Olivia, and Blake. A self-described free market conservative, he has advocated for renewable energy like wind power while criticizing fossil fuel subsidies, and was the sole Republican to support a 2023 bill banning conversion therapy for minors. Notable committee roles include minority vice chair on Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity and MEDC, and Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection.
Education
Huizenga earned a Bachelor of Arts in business administration from Calvin University in 1990 and a master’s degree in management from Aquinas College in 1996; he is also board certified as a Medical Practice Executive. He served as an adjunct instructor at Grand Valley State University.
Political Experience
Huizenga owns Mark Huizenga Systems Consulting, LLC, a healthcare consulting firm, and is managing partner of Key Green Solutions, LLC, a sustainability software company; he previously held senior roles at Spectrum Health, ProCare Systems, and Health Development International. His public service began on the Walker Planning Commission , followed by city commissioner and mayor . He served in the Michigan House for the 74th District , was assistant minority whip, then joined the Senate in 2021 and was re-elected in 2022. He has been active on boards like Michigan Conservative Energy Forum, Asthma Network of West Michigan, and Interurban Transit Partnership.
