Biography
Senator Mark Costello
Mark Costello is a Republican state senator representing District 8 in Iowa. Born in 1961 in Imogene, Mills County, he grew up in rural Iowa and continues to reside on his family farm in Mills County with his wife Rachel and their five children: Matthew, Julia, Peter, Ethan, and Andrew. The family raises corn and soybeans on their farm.
Costello is an active member of his community, serving as a past president of the Mills County Farm Bureau and as a trustee for Deer Creek Township in Mills County. He and his family are members of Sunnyside Bible Chapel in Atlantic.
Education
Costello graduated from Nishna Valley High School and earned a B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa in computer information systems in 1984.
Political Experience
Costello was elected to the Iowa House in 2012, representing House District 23, and served one term from 2013 to 2014. He was first elected to the Iowa Senate in a special election in 2014 and has served continuously in the Senate since that time.
In the Iowa Senate, Costello holds several significant positions. He serves as Vice Chair of the Health and Human Services Committee and as Chair of the Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee. He also serves on the Agriculture, Appropriations, Natural Resources and Environment, Transportation, and Veterans Affairs committees.
Prior to his political career, Costello worked as a computer programmer and analyst with Garst Seed Company in Coon Rapids, Iowa, for five years before returning to work on his family farm.
