Biography

Mario Mattera

Mario R. Mattera was born on August 18, 1963, and is a lifelong resident of Smithtown on Long Island. A Republican and Conservative, he has served as a New York State Senator since January 5, 2021, representing the 2nd Senate District. This district encompasses a significant portion of the north shore of central Long Island, including all of Smithtown and portions of Brookhaven and Huntington.

Mattera is married to Terry and has two daughters. Prior to his election to the state senate, he was deeply involved in labor organizing and union leadership, serving as the business agent of the United Association Plumbers Local 200 for over four decades.

Education and Professional Background

Mattera completed the New York State Apprenticeship Program. His professional career was centered in the union movement, where he served as a business agent and leader for Plumbers Local Union #200 for over 39 years. In this role, he oversaw the protection of more than 1,300 working members and managed over $250 million in benefit funds.

Political Experience

Mattera was first elected to the New York State Senate in November 2020, defeating former state trooper Michael Siderakis with 57.7% of the vote.

As a state senator, he holds ranking positions on the Consumer Protection and Corporations, Authorities, and Commissions committees, and serves as a member of the Labor and Transportation committees. His legislative work has focused on protecting workers' rights, advocating for prevailing labor agreements for SUNY projects, addressing property rights issues related to squatting, and protecting school funding from state education aid reductions.

Beyond his legislative role, Mattera has been active in his community, serving on the boards of several local organizations including the St. Catherine's Health and Wellness Advisory Board, Suffolk County Water Authority, and the Smithtown Advisory Board for new construction projects.
