Biography

Marie Alvarado-Gil is a Republican California State Senator representing District 4, which spans 13 rural counties in the Sierra Nevada and Central Valley, including Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne. Originally elected as a Democrat in 2022 with 52.7% of the vote, she switched to the Republican Party on August 8, 2024, citing frustration with Democratic crime policies; this led to the loss of her committee assignments and Latino Caucus membership. A Latina native Californian raised among orchards, she is married to César Alvarado-Gil with a blended family of six children. Notable achievements include authoring SB 268, a landmark bill closing a loophole to protect victims of sexual violence, and advocating for wildfire relief, agricultural rights, public safety, rural communities, and law enforcement partnerships.
