Biography
María Isa Pérez-Vega is an American politician, musician, and business owner serving as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives for District 65B since 2023. She represents parts of Saint Paul, West St. Paul, and areas in Dakota and Ramsey Counties. Born on the West Side of Saint Paul to parents of Puerto Rican heritage, she is the first openly LGBTQ Latina to serve in the Minnesota Legislature. Notable achievements include co-leading the "Driver's Licenses For All" legislation, signed into law in 2023, allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver's licenses; raising over $270,000 for Puerto Rico hurricane relief in 2018; and her work as a recording artist with SotaRico label since 2009, youth mentor, and advocate for insulin affordability as a Type 1 diabetic. She knew George Floyd personally and supported Bernie Sanders in 2020.
Education and Political Experience
Education: Graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a degree in cultural studies.
Political Experience: Elected in 2022 ; active in the DFL Latino Caucus; committee assignments include Capital Investment, Children and Families Finance and Policy, and Education Finance; previously a community organizer, youth worker with Twin Cities Mobile Jazz Project, and founder of the Spanish Speaking Affairs Council's equal opportunity efforts through her mother's legacy.
