Biography

Representative Marc Mihaly

Marc Mihaly is an American politician and attorney who serves as a Democratic member of the Vermont House of Representatives. He represents the Washington-6 district, which includes the towns of Calais, Marshfield, and Plainfield. Mihaly first joined the House in 2022 and has continued serving since then.

Mihaly resides in East Calais, Vermont, where he lives on land held cooperatively by three families, most of it in hay and forest. He is married to a children’s book author, and they have three children and five grandchildren. His background combines environmental law, higher education leadership, and community service in Vermont.

Education and Political Experience

Mihaly attended law school in California and began his legal career as a Legal Aid attorney. He later worked in the environmental unit of the California Attorney General’s office. In the 1980s, he co‑founded one of the nation’s first law firms dedicated to public interest environmental cases, representing farmers, community groups, tribal governments, and environmentally progressive cities and counties for over two decades.

In 2004, Mihaly and his wife moved to Vermont, where he held several leadership positions at Vermont Law School , including professor, director of the environmental program, President, and Dean, retiring from that role in 2017. He has also served as vice chair of the Calais Selectboard and has held board memberships with organizations such as the Vermont Land Trust, VEIC , Stone Environmental, the East Calais Community Trust, and the Rubenstein School at the University of Vermont.

In the Vermont House of Representatives, Mihaly represents the Democratic Party in the Washington-6 district. He brings a long record of environmental advocacy, public interest law, and higher education leadership into his legislative service.
