Biography
Mara Gorman is a Democratic member of the Delaware House of Representatives, representing District 23, which includes the western and northern sides of Newark, White Clay Creek State Park, and parts of lower Pike Creek. A parent, writer, and advocate, she has focused on ending gun violence, promoting reproductive rights, fostering racial equity and inclusivity, and supporting arts education. Before entering the legislature in 2024, she served as volunteer Moms Demand Action Chapter Lead, helping pass gun safety laws like an assault weapons ban and permit-to-purchase requirements, and as Public Affairs Manager for Planned Parenthood of Delaware. She is a member of the Newark Branch of the NAACP, formerly chairing its Political Action Committee, and a two-time fellow of the Delaware Division of the Arts. Notable legislative achievements include sponsoring 11 bills in her first term, such as a package limiting law enforcement partnerships with ICE. She serves on the House committees for Judiciary, Housing, Technology & Telecommunications, Corrections, and Veterans Affairs. In January 2026, she announced her candidacy for Delaware's 8th Senate District to succeed retiring Senate President Pro Tempore David Sokola.
Education and Political Experience
Education: BA cum laude in Political Science and French from Middlebury College; MFA in creative nonfiction from Pennsylvania State University.
Political Experience: Elected to the Delaware House of Representatives for District 23 in 2024, serving from 2024 to present. Prior advocacy includes leading Delaware's Moms Demand Action chapter and roles with Planned Parenthood and NAACP.
