Biography

Representative Mandie Landry

Mandie Landry is a Democratic member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, representing House District 91 in New Orleans. She was elected in November 2019 and sworn into office on January 13, 2020. Before her election to the legislature, Landry worked as a litigator, serving as an associate at Lemle & Kelleher and Liskow & Lewis before founding her own law firm in 2020.

Landry is known for her focus on progressive issues including women's rights, reproductive rights, civil rights and liberties, housing, voting, criminal justice reform, and LGBTQ+ advocacy. In November 2022, she ran for Louisiana State Senate District 5 but was defeated by Democrat Royce Duplessis. She temporarily changed her voter registration to No Party Preference but rejoined the Democratic Party before the legislature returned to session.

Education

Landry holds a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center .

Political Experience

As a member of the minority Democratic Party in a Republican-controlled legislature, Landry has worked across the aisle on various initiatives:

  • Criminal justice reform: Her first bill signed into law was HB 344, which prohibits solitary confinement for pregnant people or those who have recently given birth—the first change to Louisiana's solitary confinement law in over a century
  • Reproductive and maternal health: Secured an additional $20 million annually for maternal health care and fiercely defended reproductive rights and fertility treatments
  • District investment: Allocated millions for improved drainage and flood protection in District 91 and secured emergency power for the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board
  • Gun violence: Won bipartisan support on legislation to reduce gun violence and crime
  • Civil rights investigation: Investigated and uncovered alleged wrongdoing by Louisiana State Police in the beating death of motorist Ronald Greene

Landry currently serves on the Health and Welfare, Judiciary, and Ways and Means Committees, as well as the Joint Legislative Committee on Capital Outlay and the House Select Committee on Women and Children.
