Biography
Mana H. Abdi is a Democratic State Representative for House District 95 in Lewiston, Maine , representing parts of Lewiston. Elected in 2022 at age 26 as one of the first Somali-American legislators in Maine, she won reelection in 2024 and is serving her second term . Ethnically Somali, she was born in a Kenyan refugee camp after her family fled Somalia, immigrated to the U.S. at age 11 , and settled in Lewiston at age 13, where she has lived for over 15 years. She is the youngest of eight siblings and passionate about social justice, equitable housing, education, and supporting young entrepreneurs.
Notable achievements include co-sponsoring key bills such as "An Act to Protect Housing by Increasing the Property Tax Fairness Credit," "An Act to Advance Self-determination for Wabanaki Nations," "An Act to Create the Whole Home Repairs Program," and "An Act to Amend the Laws Governing the Foreign Credentialing and Skills Recognition Revolving Loan Program." She previously served on the Joint Standing Committee on State and Local Government and now serves on the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee and bills in the second reading committee.
Education and Political Experience
Abdi graduated from high school in Maine and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and international and global studies from the University of Maine at Farmington, where she developed her advocacy skills. Prior to politics, she engaged in community volunteer work in underrepresented communities. Her legislative service began with her historic 2022 election , followed by reelection in 2024.
