Biography
Senator Mallory McMorrow is a Democratic member of the Michigan State Senate representing the 8th District, which includes Northwest Detroit and 10 municipalities in Oakland County. Born on August 23, 1986, in Morristown, New Jersey, she lives in Royal Oak with her husband, Ray Wert, their daughter Noa, and their rescue dog, Detroit. First elected in 2018, she serves as Senate Majority Whip—the first woman in state history to hold this position—and chairs the Economic Community Development Committee while vice-chairing the Oversight Committee. Notable achievements include authoring Michigan's first Extreme Risk Protection Order gun violence prevention law, repealing the state's 1931 abortion ban, eliminating the retirement tax on seniors, ending the tampon tax, raising wages, strengthening unions, expanding free community college and K-12 school meals, banning child marriage, and securing investments in public transit, schools, childcare, and clean water. She gained national attention for a viral Senate floor speech rejecting hate after being targeted by a colleague.
