Maggy Krell is a Democratic Assemblymember representing California's 6th District, which includes most of Sacramento and surrounding unincorporated areas in Sacramento County. Elected in 2024, she serves as a lawyer and former prosecutor focused on public safety, reproductive healthcare access, addressing high prices and homelessness, and supporting vulnerable youth. Notable achievements include prosecuting operators of Backpage.com on sex trafficking charges using a breakthrough legal theory, earning a career achievement award from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, leading national litigation for Planned Parenthood California, and pro bono work reuniting separated families at the border. She won her 2024 election with 66% of the vote after a strong primary performance and supported Nevada's successful abortion rights ballot measure.
Education and Political Experience
Krell earned her Juris Doctor from the University of California, Davis School of Law in 2003 and served as an adjunct professor there. Her career began as a deputy district attorney in San Joaquin County, prosecuting cases including murder, organized crime, human trafficking, domestic violence, and white-collar crime. She advanced to the California Department of Justice as a Deputy Attorney General and Supervising Deputy Attorney General, leading the Special Prosecution Unit and acting as Special Assistant United States Attorney on high-profile cases. Previously, she ran unsuccessfully for Sacramento County District Attorney in 2014. In office since 2024, she has introduced 13 bills and filed a lawsuit against federal immigration officials for transparency on arrests.
