Biography
Lynn Evans is a Republican state senator representing District 3 in the Iowa Senate, serving since January 3, 2023. Born on May 19, 1964, he grew up in Aurelia, Iowa, where he still resides with his wife Midge, to whom he has been married for over 40 years; they have two children. A former educator and school superintendent, Evans is currently the Assistant Majority Leader, chairs the Education Committee, and serves as vice chair on Ethics, Government Oversight, and Education Appropriations subcommittees, with additional roles on Judiciary and Natural Resources & Environment. He supports gun rights, parental involvement in education, and the abolition of abortion.
Education
Evans graduated from Aurelia High School in 1982. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education and biology from Westmar College in 1986, a master's in educational leadership from Drake University in 1996, and an educational specialist degree from Drake in 2003.
Political Experience
Evans has a long career in education administration, serving as superintendent of the Hartley–Melvin–Sanborn Community School District , dual superintendencies including Aurelia , Alta and Aurelia , and the merged Alta–Aurelia district until 2019. Post-retirement, he consulted for JMC, Inc., and taught as an adjunct instructor at Buena Vista University. In politics, he ran unsuccessfully in the 2020 Republican primary for Iowa House District 3 but won the 2022 Iowa Senate District 3 Republican primary and the general election unopposed. He is active in community groups, including as president of the Alta Kiwanis Club and a member of Aurelia First United Methodist Church.
