Biography
Senator Löki Gale Tobin is a Democratic member of the Alaska State Senate representing District I, which covers Downtown Anchorage and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Born and raised in Nome, Alaska, she was elected in November 2022 and assumed office on January 17, 2023, serving in the 33rd-34th Legislatures . As a queer woman of color with ties to Alaska's Indigenous communities, she emphasizes empathy, bipartisan collaboration, and addressing historical injustices like redlining.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a BA from the University of Alaska Anchorage and an MA in rural development from the University of Alaska Fairbanks through the Peace Corps Master's International Program. Currently a PhD candidate at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, researching culturally responsive education.
- Early Career: Volunteered with the Peace Corps in Azerbaijan as a youth development volunteer. Worked in marketing and communications for Alaskan nonprofits, including Kawerak , Alaska Community Foundation , and Anchorage Museum Association .
- Political Experience: Served as policy director for State Senator Tom Begich , focusing on universal pre-K expansion, renter protections, and Alaska Constitution issues. Encouraged by Begich to run after his retirement, she filed paperwork quickly and won her Senate seat.
