Biography
Senator Liz Stefanics ** represents **District 39 in the New Mexico State Senate, covering San Miguel, Santa Fe, Torrance, and Valencia counties. She is a Democratic state senator serving her third term, initially from 1993-1996 and continuously since 2017 . Notable achievements include chairing the Senate Conservation Committee, serving as interim chair of the Senate Water and Natural Resources Committee, and extensive public service in health policy, education, and support for the elderly and disabled. She has also worked as Santa Fe County Commissioner , Deputy Secretary of the New Mexico Human Services Department, and executive director of the non-profit Open Hands.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota; M.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; B.S. from Eastern Kentucky University. She moved to New Mexico over 35 years ago to teach at the University of New Mexico and later served as faculty in the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Program at UNM.
