Biography
Senator Liz Miranda
Liz Miranda is a Massachusetts State Senator representing the Second Suffolk District, a seat described as the center of Black political power in Boston. Born and raised in the Dudley Street Triangle in Roxbury, Massachusetts, Miranda is the daughter of Cabo Verdean immigrants. She is 44 years old, having been born on June 29, 1981.
Miranda's path to public service was shaped by personal tragedy. After gun violence claimed the life of her brother, she became motivated to run for elected office in 2018. Her lived experience as a survivor of homicide has deeply informed her legislative priorities and advocacy work.
Before her election to the State Senate, Miranda worked for two decades as a community organizer and youth worker. She describes her approach as "neighborhood by neighborhood, brick by brick, and block by block," working directly with constituents to address systemic inequities affecting working families, small businesses, communities of color, and immigrant communities.
Political Experience
Miranda's legislative record reflects her commitment to social justice and community protection. As a lead author of the police reform omnibus bill that passed in 2021, she helped shape criminal justice reform in Massachusetts. Her advocacy has extended across multiple policy areas:
- Violence prevention and gun safety: She has tripled violence prevention funding since her first term in the legislature
- Environmental justice: She passed legislation providing enforceable protections for environmental justice communities
- Maternal health: She improved maternal health outcomes for Black women and birthing people and extended postpartum health insurance coverage
- Criminal justice reform: She worked to end solitary confinement in state prisons
- Public health: She ensured vaccine equity in communities most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic
- Economic support: She delivered an additional $10 million in COVID-19 relief funding to the most-impacted Black and Brown-owned small businesses
- Immigrant rights: As the daughter of West African immigrants, she has been a tireless advocate for immigrant justice, fighting for the Safe Communities Act and the Work and Family Mobility Act
Education and Background
While specific details about Miranda's formal education are not provided in available sources, her background as an entrepreneur and community organizer demonstrates significant professional experience prior to her legislative career. She brought practical experience in community engagement and social justice work to her role as State Representative for the 5th Suffolk before her election to the State Senate.
